Join me for a three-hour workshop during which you'll see examples of historical and contemporary botanical field sketches, learn about materials, get professional tips, and create field sketches in the Lord and Schryver gardens. No drawing experience necessary.

Please call the conservancy at (503) 838-0527 to register. Pre-payment is required to reserve your place as spaces are very limited. A list of supplies is provided upon registration.

I recently completed a new painting of the Oregon Iris (Iris tenax). It's an addition to the natural plant dye series and I'm excited to share it here! The Oregon iris is an iconic image of spring in these parts and a plant that I've long wanted to paint. Its roots produce grey and black dyes and the flowers are used to create fugitive (short-lasting) blue and purple dyes. I had so much fun adding details to the flowers and learning the dye applications of this beautiful wildflower. Happy spring!

rory fly sketches

rory fly final

My most recent commission was of a Rory fly. The Rory pattern is used for fishing Atlantic salmon in Ireland. There are slight variations between each Rory fly, depending on the preferences of the individual fly tyer. This painting, completed in watercolor and gouache, was part of the live auction at the Northwest Fly Tying & Fly Fishing Expo in Albany, Oregon on March 9th & 10th. I created six small color sketches for review by the client (upper images) before beginning the final painting (lower image). I really enjoyed my first foray into fly patterns. Let's be honest - what artist wouldn't jump at a chance to paint these colors?

Sacred lotus! I recently completed this piece as a commission for two lovely clients. The piece is large at 22" x 30" and 100% genuine watercolor. This is the largest watercolor I've ever painted and its size brought on its own set of challenges; it was tough to hold the paper at an angle for flat washes, the paper really wanted to buckle, and wet paint had more room to roam. In the end though, I'm happy with the scale of the painting and may just have to try a few more at this size.
